In the ten years that Music Box Unwinds has been online, we have never covered anything other than music. Things are changing on the site and the main thing is the TV and Film section that is being added!
It’s only right that for our first ever TV feature/recommendation is that it is on the insanely phenomenal channel from the History Channel, Vikings! It has quickly became one of my top three shows of all time alongside Game of Thrones and Sons of Anarchy. I can’t recommend it enough, so if you’re new to it or long time fan and just need a recap, the. Read on! Thank you, Michael Hirst for this show!
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!
Well, it’s not long now until the incredible Vikings comes back to our screens for their fifth season! Vikings has been following the famous Ragnar Lothbrok as he goes along with a fleet of long ships and men from his village of Kattegat raid other lands! The first season introduces you to Ragnar (played by Travis Fimmel) who works on his farm alongside his shieldmaiden wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and their children Bjorn and Gyda.
Ragnar has discovered a new way to lead the men across the water to England, a land that they had never expected to get to raid. Without the backing from Earl Haraldson, he goes against his orders and has his best friend and chief boat builder Floki build Ragnar his own fleet of boats.
Considering the success of their voyage Ragnar has a lot to contend with over the following seasons, whilst in England he decides to get himself his own “pet Christian” according to Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård), becomes Earl of Kattegat, then must deal with the betrayal and jealousy of his brother, Rollo (Clive Standen) on a couple of occasions, Lagertha and his son Bjorn leaving him as he became a father again to another son, Ubbe with Princess Aslaug. He eventually becomes King of Kattegat and his troubles don’t ease off at all for him… in other words, never a dull moment in the life of Ragnar Lothbrok and those who choose to follow him.
Season five is going to start with a two-hour long premier on November 29th on the History Channel. This is following the massive 20-episode season four that was split into two halves to cover all the stories and drama that follows Ragnar, his sons and his crew. Lagertha also has her issues in this upcoming season as she found out at the end of season four that King Harald had conspired to over-throw Queen Lagertha and become King of all of Norway. There’s also the issue of will King Harald (Peter Franzén) seek revenge on his brother Halfdan the Black (Jasper Pääkkönen) for killing the supposed love of his life?
The main problems now lie within the Lothbrok brothers whose personalities and attitudes seem to be clashing more than ever and the fact that Ivar (Alex Hogh Andersen) flew off the handle and embedded an axe in his brother Sigurd’s chest did not help matters at all. All the conflict between the Lothbrok’s seems to be building up to one almighty Civil War but what brothers will stick together and who will be there to stand with them? They have all got their own agendas and dreams so it will be interesting to see where it takes them and also how far it will take them personally.
Over the seasons the production has grown as the storylines have become bigger and taken everyone on their own adventures. This season looks to have Bjorn and Halfdan travelling across the Mediterranean, Ivar taking over York, Floki going on a self searching journey and Harald confronting Lagertha back in Kattegat.
Just when you thought things couldn’t get bigger and more exciting, I am more than sure that season five is going to be the most explosive season yet!
